A gentlemen pauses at a service window (left) on the main concourse of the Boston & Maine’s Union Station. Iron fencing and gates (right) protect the tracks and platforms. Train departure boards (Figure 4.39) punctuate the fencing. In the distance, under the billboards, the concourse extends into the portion of the complex opened in 1873 by the Boston & Lowell.
