Boston in Transit - The Book
Figure 8.35 - MTA Modified Express Service Poster, 1960

A poster explains one of the MTA’s service experiments, “modified express service” implemented on what is now the Red Line. Under the service, sometimes referred to as skip-stop service, certain trains stopped at every other station along the line. These trains then ran express through unserved stations. As reflected by vintage graffiti on the poster, some riders were confused by the service. Modified express service lasted less than a year.
