As early as 1928, Cambridge-Dorchester rapid transit cars wore Order of Stations signs listing stations from Harvard to Ashmont. As the sign instructs, riders heading “To Dorchester” “read down” the list for upcoming stops. Conversely, riders “read up” if they were travelling “To Cambridge.”
