Boston in Transit - The Book
Figure 1.64 - Boston Directory Map, 1857
The lines of eight independent steam railroad companies span local waterways and link Boston with surrounding communities. No fewer than three horse railroad lines radiate from downtown into surrounding neighborhoods. A double line traces the tracks of the Cambridge Railroad from the intersection of Cambridge and Court Streets, along Cambridge Street, and across the Charles River via the West Boston Bridge. A double line traces the Metropolitan from the intersection of Court Street and Tremont Row, along Tremont and Washington Streets, and into Roxbury.
